The Hasedo area of Yamagata City is the site of a battle known as “The Sekigahara of the North”. KANBAYASHI Tsunehira, the only swordsmith in Yamagata, has a forge here. He is a master who rose to the highest rank of Mukansa-ranked master swordsmith at the young age of thirty-six. Now in his seventies, he continues to take up the challenge of making Japanese swords without any sign of quitting. What is at the core of the act of forging (“Tan”) iron and forging one’s integrity? A documentary that explores KANBAYASHI’s approach to making Japanese swords.

Director: Mr. NAGAOKA Hiroaki
Born in Yamagata City. Graduated from Yamagata Minami High School. After working for a TV program production company in Yamagata City for about 20 years, he moved to a local TV station in Yamagata Prefecture. During his 25 years of TV career, he has been in charge of all kinds of news and production programs. He worked at NHK Sendai Station when the Great East Japan Earthquake struck. He also experienced disaster response on an unprecedented scale. In March 2022, he became independent and currently produces corporate PVs, wedding videos, and YouTube videos as a “Video Creator” in addition to supporting NHK and commercial broadcast program production.
